For Codova Bay Soccer players, parents and families

Weren't those fireworks great on Sunday night? Many congratulations to the Cordova Bay Elementary PAC for organising such a succesful event. And wasn't it tremendous to see so many people down at the soccer fields for a very different kind of event than we have most weekends. Leo - have your ears recovered yet?

In this issue of Goals by the Bay - in an order that may have little to do with the order in which they come below!: 1st entry - describe the goal competition; Bob Cats Weave their spell; Blue Breakers crash the shore; Off side explained for spectators - yes that means you!; Playing for Time; Respecting Refs; Team photos and retakes - only two chances to look good; Thunder strikes, lightning quick; SPECIAL FEATURE: artificial turf fundraisng - FELPS; Wolves online; U 21s triumph!; and, finally [a clue for the question below] "it is over now"...

Plus, please keep an eye on the Club's web site at www.cordovabaysoccer.org - information will be updated there on a regular basis.

1. LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT

In the previous issue of Goals By The Bay I challenged people to compete for the best description of a goal in a Cordova Bay game. Here is our first entry - from Brian Roach describing Elaina Robinson’s first goal ever:

“Starting by winning the ball with a tenacious tackle at the centerline, Elaina dribbled the ball through the entire Prospect Lake team, covering the opponents half of the field with deft moves - left, right, left - breaking through all tackles and then finishing with a quick shot on goal, leaving the goalie just standing there watching the netting ripple behind her”

Excellent - come on - can anyone beat that. Without getting too far ahead of ourselves we end this issue of GBTB with one of the most famous descrptions ever of a goal being scored.

2. BOBCATS WEAVE THEIR SPELL

From Doug Anderson, Assistant General Manager, Cordova Bay Bobcats

After a start to the season most teams would want to forget, the Cordova Bay Bobcats have two wins in a row and are now moving up in the standings. It wasn't going to be an easy season with some tough teams in their division and a couple of 1-0 loses were a little hard to take when they had played so well. The Bobcats have had a little trouble scoring early in the season and the last two games have brought their confidence back with 7 goals for and 0 against.

This weekend the Bobcats travelled to beautiful Brentwood Bay to play the Saanich Braves. The Bobcats showed up to the field with almost a full squad while the Braves showed up with 9 players to the start of the game. The Bobcats started to play a relaxed game being two players up and that almost cost them early with a Brave player given a near breakaway. Tony Fogelkou opened the scoring for the Bobcats with his first of the season with a shot that went right through the keepers hands. About ten minutes later third year veteran Ryan Hourston also with his first of the season found the back of the old net on a great individual effort to put the Bobcats up 2-0. The score stayed 2-0 until mid way through the second half when Mark Ardiel came to the net and made an unselfish pass six yards out to Doug Anderson who easily placed the ball into the net for his first of the season. Late in the half the Bobcats had a corner kick which was taken by Doug Anderson who was lookin g for the near post. The ball was misplayed by the keeper and fell into the back of the net. Final score was Bobcats 4-0 over Saanich.

Bobcats finish the first half of the season against second place Gordon Head next weekend. With the second half of the season around the corner the Bobcats look to improve on their seventh position in the standings.

3. "BLUE BREAKERS CRASH THE SHORE"

Brian Roach, Dad of Emmalee Roach of the Cordova Bay Blue Breakers U12 Girls Silver Team sent this report:

Cordova Bay Blue Breakers continue on with their successful ways - although only playing four games so far this year (missed two games with a bye and a “no-show”), the team has already scored 17 goals for, and have had only 3 goals against. Nicolle Conti and Jillian Alley have been dazzling in goal – with some spectacular saves. The whole team has been involved in the goals scored this year – a real team effort. The team has been focusing on playing as a team, making good passes, and all contributing to excellent defensive play. Well done Chelsea Howells, Liz Burden, Caitlyn Anderson, Lauren Mannix, Mackenzie Dirkie, Jillian Alley, Nicolle Conti, Samantha Billson, Kelsey Hong, Erin Houston, Maria Verbrugge, Emmalee Roach and Rhyley Bremner.

4. "OFF SIDE" RULES!

Right - we all complain when off-side decisions are given but do we know what we are talking about [a statement specific to the off-side rule in soccer not life in general!]. Brian Roach kindly provides the following explanation of off-side. There will be random tests for spectators this weekend!

New for many of the players this year (and the parents that get persuaded into being a lines-person) is the enforcement of the offside rule at the U12 level. For their benefit and for those lucky parents, let us all take a moment and review the basics of the offside rule:

1st, it is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position. One is only committing an offside offence if (in the opinion of the referee) one is in an offside position and involved in active play by: interfering with play, interfering with an opponent, or gaining an advantage by being in that position.

2nd, there is no offside offence if a player receives a ball directly from: a goal kick, a throw-in, a corner kick, or are in their own half of the field.

3rd, a player is in an offside position if they are closer to the opponents’ goal line than the ball and the second last opponent (the last opponent is usually the goalie) the moment the ball touches or is played by a team mate (e.g. the moment the ball is kicked to them). So, if a player is a fast runner, they could run past the last defender and get the ball and not be offside. Also, standing beside or “level” with the last defender is OK, as it is not closer to the opponents' goal.

4th, for an offside offence, the referee awards an indirect free kick to the opposing team to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred.”

5. PLAYING TIME and REFEREE RESPECT

Two items requested by a club member of Frank Leversedge - who provided these answers.

It is club policy that all players should play a minimum 50% of each game - assuming availability. There are good reasons for this. The exception is if the player hadn't been at the previous practice, in which case, the coach uses the policy with discretion, given the circumstances.

Although personally, as a referee, I [Frank says] am very satisfied with the respect shown me, the following reminder is requested from other observations:

The club has a very good reputation for respecting referees. Verbal abuse and questioning decisions of the referee from the sidelines is not constructive, is invariably biased, sends the wrong message to players, and often reflects poor eyesight and poor judgement from critics in a worse viewing position.

By all means, chat to the referee at half-time or at the end of the game if there is concern, but do it in a supportive, respectful manner.

6. TEAM PHOTOS

Team photos wil be taken November 5th or 6th - your team's coach and/or manager should have the specific time for your team. Retakes will be on November 20 from 1:00 to 2:00. All photo sessions will be at Lochside Fields. For more information contact Gord Lee at on 658-5879

7. HARDWORKING COBRAS

Michael Kennedy sent this update on The Cobras U 10 Boys:

A strong, hardworking group of boys who are undefeated so far in league play. We do not have one dominating player, but a bunch of boys who have learned early on to play as a team on both sides of the ball. We have some strong defensive players, a couple good goalies, some playmakers and a number of boys who have put the ball in the net. Keep up the good work!

8. THUNDER STRIKES, LIGHTNING QUICK!

Brian Roach, Dad of Megan Roach of the Cordova Bay Thunder U9 Girls Team also sent this report:

The Cordova Bay Thunder U9 Girls Team (Super 6’s) is still undefeated after six games so far this year. With five times more goals scored than let in (35 goals for and 7 goals against) this U9 team is a scoring “team-machine”. The whole team has been working very well together - well done Brooke Ellis, Brooke Graham, Caleigh McGhee, Elaina Robinson, Jessica Webster, Lexy Stewart, Marissa Dheensaw, Megan Roach, Paula Cameron, and Taya Heaney. Possibly the two girls that are leading the team with the scoring this year, Brooke Graham and Marissa Dheensaw, have their older soccer playing sisters (Shalie & Kelli) to thank them – with all those years of bugging them – every time they shoot the ball, they think of their sister and score! For most of the girls, this is their third year of playing soccer. While for three of the girls: Paula Cameron, Elaina Robinson and Megan Roach, this is their first year ever to play this exciting game of soccer. This last weekend game at Be ckwith Park, against the Prospect Lake team, had two of these new players: Megan Roach and Elaina Robinson notch their first goal ever.

SPECIAL FEATURE: FELPS FUNDRAISING

Raising money for artifical turf playing surfaces at Lochside Fields

From Frank Leversedge who is leading the fund-raising drive on behlaf of the Club Executive

A big ‘thank you’ to all the coaches/managers who came out to the FELPS fundraising meeting last Thursday. We are on our way!

As soon as possible, please ensure:

- that you have given to every player on your team: a Fundraising handbook; two Thrifty Foods Smile Cards; explanatory notes on the use of the Smile Cards, Save-On Gas discounts and the gaming Academy; and, a pledge sheet.

- that you stress to all your team, the need to: start using the Smile Card, and enroll other users, as soon as possible – every delay is lost fundraising; read the handbook to become familiar with the various dimensions of the FELPS fundraising project; immediately encourage relatives and friends to buy the $20 Save-On Gas certificates so that we can take advantage of the Peninsula Co-op $2,000 donation to FELPS; we need to sell out quickly to seek further donations; identify, with family involvement, and record on their pledge sheet, potential sponsors to ‘turf’ the FELPS wall;

- that you have someone from your team volunteer as the team FELPS Facilitator (see Handbook, page 13) and that have that person e-mail me at FELPS@shaw.ca confirming their appointment and their e-mail address;

- that you stress to your team, that the secret to our success is to enroll as many fundraisers as possible, from family, friends, co-workers, business contacts and alumni, and with invitations for them to do likewise. Promotion is progress!

- anyone wanting more Smile cards should inform their FELPS Facilitator – or me, dierectly. I have plenty more!

Thanks for your support and cooperation. ENJOY!

Contact Frank Leversedge on 658–5964 or FELPS@shaw.ca for more details

9. WOLVES ONLINE

Derek Brooker sent this report:

For the second week in a row the Cordova Bay Wolves faced the Gordon Head #1 team. Last week in the L.I.S.A. Jamboree Gordon Head got the better of the Wolves 7-2. A slow start in that game saw Gordon Head get an early 4-0 lead. This week at Lochside Park it looked for a while that the outcome may be reversed. The Wolves came out tackling and attacking and had Gordon Head back on their heels for much of the 1st half. The first shifts of the game saw Olivia, Megan, Madeline and Jenessa in defense and Annabel and Lista in midfield feeding perfect passes forward. Both Madison and Margaret had great opportunites to score. Only some stellar goalkeeping and desperate defense on the part of Gordon Head kept the Wolves off the scoreboard. At the other end of the field, Emma's attacking style in goal shut down any glimmers of hope in the Wolves penalty area...

For the rest you will have to go to The Wolves on web site where there is a full report, pictures and other information about this team online - go to http://www.derekbrooker.ca/wolves/

10. U 21s TRIUMPH

Here's the story for Cordova Bay FC U21's game on October 15th, from Alberto Carranza.

There's no place like home, that's how the Cordova Bay FC U21's felt after returning home for only the second time in the past 6 games. They played the Tsawout Warriors this past Sunday (Oct.15), having home field advantage paid off big and I mean BIG for the fairly young U21 squad. The squad which has struggled to find the back of the net this season ran a clinic, beating their opponents 12-1. Team captain Graham McCrodan led the way with 4 goals, fellow striker Matt Barnett contributed 3 goals to the affair, Keith Wedgewood came out of goal to add 1 more goal to the score, Dan Bear made a brillant run down the left side to beat his mark and score a beautiful break away goal, Neal Mcreath joined in the offense with 1 goal, finnally Addy Treleaven scored 1 goal on a well taken penalty kick. Clearly, Cordova Bay FC
U21 are happy to be back at Lochside, and they will have home field advantage once again this Sunday (Oct.23) against league rivals Juan De Fuca U21, kick off is at 12 noon. As everyone knows winning is contagious, hopefully they can carry their momentum into the Juan De Fuca game and go on a winning streak.

Lets finish with this famous description of a famous soccer goal

"They think it is all over...It is over now"

Can anyone under 50 years of age tell me which match commentary that phrase comes from? Tremendous prizes to be won! Bonus prizes for telling me who scored the goal that is described in this phrase. And, an even better prize [maybe a Leicester City scarf!] if you can tell me the name of the commentator. Kids - get on the internet and find out the answers!

Have a tremendous set of matches this weekend. Please keep the match reports and other information flowing.

Keep kicking - the ball, the Ball!

Peace!
