GOALS BY THE BAY!

Issue 5 of the email magasine of the Cordova Bay Soccer Club
Feb 27, 2005

Editor: Warren Feek
Reporters: Mark O'Kelly-Lynch and Braden Martin-Feek
Researchers: Rylan Brotherston and Logan Martin-Feek

Hi - it has been a while since the last issue - apologies - a combination of the bad January weather with no games, illness, travel and...well... a bad case of "I must do another issue of the magasine next week!" Enough excuses - what tremendous weather last week - matched only by some even better games. And please note the help I had this time around...very keen and promising reporters and researchers.

So - on with the news - in this issue: Champs and Finals galore; Unstoppable Dynamos; Bandits and Gunners; Fashionable Toques and Hoodies; World Cup Registration; Sponsor thanks; Why Soccer; Web News; Super Y tryouts; and Gord Lee Wins!

1. U14 Girls are Island Champs!

"The Loch" was the place to be Saturday afternoon. Katie Nelles and Brian Collards' U 14 Girls became Island Champions in the "C" Cup with a tremendous 3-1 victory over Nanaimo. Julie got all three goals. Interviewed by Mark and Braden afterwards she felt that the third goal was the best - picking the ball up 40 meters from goal, powering forward and placing a very crisp shot in the bottom right corner just beyond a tremendous attempt by the Nanaimo goalie to get her hand on the ball. Move over Wayne Rooney! Goals are made by teams, a point stressed by Coach Nelles in her post-game press conference. Excellent effort all round by all the players. The next stop in their quest for the provincial championship is a game in Vancouver - opponent not yet known. Go the claret and blue!

2. U15 Boys Gold are Lower Island Champs!

Wow - another champion team this year. A very proud Coach Glen Prevost sent this report.

"Cordova Bay/Prospect Lake U15 Boys Gold played Bays United on Saturday February 19 for the right to be the Lower Island B Cup representative. The boys have had a lot of success this year. They haven't lost all season and have come first in the league standings with 10 wins and 2 draws. They started the cup playoffs with a bye after the long Christmas monsoon break. They played Lakehill in the semi-final and after some brilliant saves by Brandon Shaw, Dave Jollymore headed home the winning goal from a set play off Tyler Anderson with just two minutes left in the second overtime period for a 1-0 win. In the final match against Bays United last weekend, Ross Prevost scored the first goal, from a hard low cross off Dan Caspick in the first half. Early in the second half, Cordova Bay/Prospect Lake had several goal scoring opportunities but the second goal was finally scored by Evan Rinald, assisted by Ross Prevost to win the game 2-0. This win secured the team the chance to play!
in the Island B Cup Finals for the third year in a row! This group of boys has been so successful because of their dedication to team play. Their skill and versatility in different positions is impressive. Well done guys!"

And we add our congratulations - great stuff guys! Go the Caret and Blue!

3. U18 Boys Gold in Island final for Provincial B Cup

Our congratulations to the U18 Prospect Lake/Cordova Bay team that defeated Lakehill 2-1 last Sunday to quaify for the Island final in the Provincial B Cup. A massive effort guys - well done and good luck from us all as you progress to the Provincial Championships. [No full report on this one I am afraid. With the number of CB teams in the finals our reporting resources were over-stretched!]

4. Dynamic Dynamos!

Jim Turner sent this report on another great performance by the U 11 Girls Dynamos.

"Another dominant performance against Gordon Head by the still undefeated U-11 girls Dynamos. Gordon Head tried the late game tactic of a 3:00 start with the Dynamos defending the lower portion of the 45 degree Maynard Park near UVic. in the first half. To no avail as Cordova Bay spent the whole first half in their end and came away with a 3-0 halftime lead, with downhill advantage for the second half. On Sam Lee's first of two tallys, she made a scintillating deke at center, completely faked another defender, and slammed a perfect "Bend it like Beckham" shot from the 20 yard mark into the top left corner for the games most exciting tally in the first half, and this from the Sweeper spot. Brilliant passing, with a spectacular defensive wall set up by the Dynamos kept the Gordon Head girls hemmed in their half for the rest of the game. 3 more goals, 4 goal post hits, and some good goaltending from a shell shocked GH goaltender, and the girls came away with a 6-0 victory. N!
ikki Turner notched her 30th and 31st of the season, Nickole Krossner and Nicole Conti the other scorers. The whole team played well, as their record can attest to. With two more games to go, a couple of more wins will give the Dynamos a 4 year undefeated streak. (Crossed fingers, for no jinx) Oddly enough, the Dynamos are probably the smallest team in the league, but they share huge tenacity and heart with the best of them. You GO Girls!!!!!"

We agree - Go CB Girls Go!

5. Bandits Raid Gunners

If you are a fan of crisp passing, solid tackling, fair play, sharp shooting and acrobatic saves then your life is the poorer for not being at Reynolds Park on Saturday morning [early!]. In a clash of the two top teams in U10 Boys, Marty and Dave's Bandits neutralised and then dismantled the Gunners. Special mention to Mark O'Kelly-Lynch for his hat-trick [Landsdowne Road is calling!] and Pieter Heerschop for his amazing saves [the Orange are on the phone!]. But they all played so well on this day - Riley, Marcel, Spencer, Wesley, Jordan, Braden, Peter and Mark. Well done guys - top of the table and more importantly playing with great enthusiasm, skill and learning.

6. Fashionable Toques and Hoodies [no - that is not an oxymoron!]

Take a look at the photos of some very high class international fashion models in the latest fashion craze to sweep the grassy vistas of "The Loch" and other local playing fields. They are featured in the middle column of the web site at http://www.cordovabaysoccer.org/default.php Take a look and then email Drew at timberwolf65@shaw.ca to place your orders. Or buy them at the concession. Who is that guy in the middle anyway - looks vaguely familiar?

7. World Cup Registration

Please do not forget to register for the excellent World Cups tournament. And please ring your friends playing for other Victoria and Lower Island teams and encourage them to participate also. The more the better! The registration form can be downloaded at http://www.cordovabaysoccer.org/forms/2005World.pdf or picked up from any branch of Coast Capital Savings.

8. Why Soccer?

The question in this issue of the magasine is: How did football come to be called "soccer" in North America? We all know why - so that it can be distinguished from Canadaian and American Football. But why the name Soccer? Where does that name come from? This question is particularly for Kids [and Adults who do not know of course!].

9.New Look web site

Check out the new web site design - not that much difference but we have cleaned up a few things. We will now work to get a lot more content on the site so please send us everything that you have!

11. Super Y Try outs

This note from Lower Island Soccer. We include it in it's entirety as the dates are near. Good luck if you do try out for these advanced teams.

"The Lower Island Soccer Association will be holding tryouts for the Island Super Y League teams. The Vancouver Island Region will be forming one combined Lower Island/Upper Island team per gender and age division from U13 to U17. As competition is extremely high for these teams and in order to field the strongest team at each particular age division, those players who are eligible for a younger age division due to their birth date, are strongly recommended to attend that age group tryout. The cost of a tryout will be $15 each. Those players who are in DDC training on Saturday nights, who are currently on a Metro/Select team or who are attending the LISA Academy training are exempt from this fee.

12. Gord Lee Wins!

In the previous issue of "Goals by The Bay" I asked club members to nominate the best players that they had ever seen play soccer. There were some great recommendations: Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Pele, Lineker, Beckham et al but the winner by some considerable distance in this open, transparent and scientific poll is our own Gord Lee. Congratulations Gord. Either you possess supreme skill or very few club members have travelled outside Cordova Bay. A club member who voted for Gord thinks that it is your undoubted skill that won the day. He penned this tribute!

"Gord Lee Superstar
The C.A. who always gives a Good Account of Himself

The choice of Gord Lee as the best player in the world comes as no surprise.

Gord rightfully belongs with past legends. A natural dribbler since he was a baby, he has a real nose for goal and that’s why he plays centre. As a lethal striker, he floors the opposition and through his disarming manner, maintains the upper hand against them – without causing offence. He figures in all the scores, his bottom line being to give a good account of himself by keeping a clean sheet. His shot is out of this world and spot on when taking a penalty kick. He angles his corners and can bury a dead ball anywhere in the box. Gord can hit the bar - from any opportunity, that’s why he plays with such spirit, rarely whines and drinks in the atmosphere of every game.

He has great vision – beyond that of his peers – and a great eye for contacts. His tackling is uplifting and Gord is recognized for pioneering the ‘block and tackle’ method. He is not one to chicken out of fouls and is arguably the most appealing player. Gord is considered a ten-acious player – one of the elite who tries to play ten times better than when he first started. He has a jump on everybody when going for high balls and, in the air, he is a real head case. His work rate is staggering, as is his first touch according to those who have played against him. Gord never seems to flag, particularly when running the line. His technique is unique and he is much loved for the passes he makes – to the spectators. As a rule, he has the measure of the opposition and, with Skil-ful power, he cuts through defences to give his team the edge. Noted for his effortless approach, Gord feints easily and is prone to pass out on the wing with great effect. His team mates consider!
his best position left outside and feel they play much better when he doesn’t come back.

Gord’s throw-on is something special. With his magical sleight of hand, it’s a far-flung, soaring trajectory of well-versed poetry in motion, known globally as ‘The Arc de Triomphe’. He is the only known soccer player who can throw the ball farther than he can kick it!

It is not generally known that the slogan ‘Bend it like Beckham’ has its origins in the chants around Lochside of ‘Leave it to Lee’ and ‘Go, goal king Gord’. His fans worship him, with more than an idle curiosity, and laud him in unison with ‘In Gord we trust’ and ‘Good Gord, you’re on side’.

For Gord, the ‘bootiful’ game is where he gets his kicks. His unwavering philosophy has always been open play, open boundaries and open fields.

Truly, Gord is a Lochside legend in his own time, make no mythtake about it!

Respectfully submitted – with no apologies!!"

Wow - and I thought Pele was good!

Oh - almost forgot to mention the prize! A free session with Janice Lee Photography!

***

OK - there can be no better note to end than that! As there is lots of news I had no time to even mention Leicester City [last 8 of the FA Cup! LC LCF LCFC FC!! Go you blue boys! - sorry - got carried away].

Keep those match reports coming in. We will try to get out two more issues of the magazine as the season comes to an end. In particular can all teams that are in island and provincial championship play send me reports on your progress.

Keep kicking! Peace ...and Goals of course!
