Goals By The Bay - Issue 4
GOALS BY THE BAY!
Issue 4 of the email magasine of the Cordova Bay Soccer Club
December 7, 2004

Hi - how are the games going?. Hope that everyone is having a great time. Sorry it has been 6 weeks since the last issue due to...oh forget the excuses...on with the news!

In this issue: Cool Cats Roll; TSUNAMIS Wave; Gold Trumph; Banditising Gorge; Mature men - where are you?; Warm Thanks; Thankfully...concession; Coffee can wait; CB Soccer on the web; Blue boy lions in white; Registrar thanks; Who da Best?; Closing fields; Overtime - and Happy Festive season.

1. U11 GIRLS COOL CATS TEAM ON A ROLL

At the half way point of the year, the U11 Girls Cool Cats team has an impressive record of 9 wins, 2 ties and 0 losses. One of the ties was a 0 - 0 game against the other Cordova Bay Girls U11 team - the Dynamos. During this span the girls have only allowed 5 goals against and scored 49 for. Keep up the good work girls!

2. WAVE TSUNAMIS ON!

On October 23rd the U12 Girls Silver Team - The Tsunamis - played the Juan de Fuca team and won 4-2. Manager Cathy sent this report: "Lina Scigliano got us on the board with a beautiful goal asisted by Rosie Beale. Emily Thiessen carried the ball in to score the second goal which she then volleyed over the goalies hands into the net. The Tsunamis realy came alive in the 2nd half with some excellent passes, defense and hard shots at the net. The score could have been much higher if it was not for the focus of the new Juan de Fuca goalie. Her skills were exceptional. The 3rd Goal was scored by Georgia Hickson assisted by Nicky Block. The final goal, just before the whistle, was a bulett by Megan Rowlett assisted by Georgia's beautiful cross-over, that was stopped by the goalie, but Dale Robinsn got the rebound to score. The Tsunamis did it again!"

3. U13 BOYS INAUGURAL WIN

Just after the most recent issue of this magasine the U13 Boys Gold Team scored their first win of the season. Dave reports that they "beat Juan de Fuca 1-0 in a hard fought battle on enemy turf in mid-October. The lads had been working their collective butts off at practice and got their just rewards. The lone goal was scored by Evan Scotney after an initial burst of speed down the wing by Mark Bell, Evan blasting it top shelf. Ethan Garland, Jacson Biehl and the rest of the boys defence fought hard to maintain the 1-0 lead and Rajyn Thouli made some outstanding saves both early and late in the game to preserve the wn and get his first shut-out of the season." Well done guys - sounds like a great team effort.

4. "MATURE" ADULT TEAMS

Hey - where are the reports from the more 'mature' teams in the Club - the adult teams - send us your match reports or I will resort the time honoured journalistic trick of invoking journalistic license and making it all up - and it will not make for pretty reading! [Apologies to Mr Dheenshaw for the totally groundless slur on journalists.]

5. U11 BANDIT BOYS AT THE GORGE

Well - the Bandits went to Gorge, rode over the horizon and plundered a 6-1 victory. Tremendous play in shockingly cold conditions [believe me!]. Riley Nellis had his best defensive ride-out for the Bandits with some excellent stops and clearances. JR [no - not Dallas JR - our own Jordan Reda] slotted two good goals, one of which was a first timer on the turn from a wide out cross. Pieter Heerschop banditised the Gorge defense all day. Oh it reminded me of the glory days at Filbert Street. A good win and off for a drink - sadly coffee this time as it was 10am!

6. WARM THANKS

A big thanks from the the U-12 Girls silver team [the above reported TSUNAMIS] to everyone who purchased the "Down Lap Blankets" that they are selling as a fund-raiser. Now that winter is really here - along with Xmas of course - just a gentle reminder that you can still get some of these by emailing Nicky Block at theblocks@shaw.ca - order now!

7. CONCESSION

Q. Where would we be without the concession?

A. In a very bad way with a lot of very grumpy, hungry and thirsty kids and adults and a lot less money in the club coffers.

Unlike a Harry Potter movie concessions do not take place by magic - they need organising and running. For a number of years we have been blessed with two of the very best running our concession. Sadly, but understandably, Marlene Carriss and Cathy Gustafson have decided that they will not be avalable to run the concession next year. Here is her Marlene's note to "Goals by the Bay"

"After many years of running the concession, I have decided to pass it on to someone else. Although it is a weekly commitment, it doesn't take a lot of time. It's a great way to get involved with your child's soccer club.

Cathy Gustafson has done a fantastic job of scheduling the teams to work in the concession for the past couple of years. She has also decided to pass her job on.

Please either call me at 658-4290 or e-mail me mcarriss@telus.net. I would be happy to work along with you at the beginning. Thanks - Marlene"

So - many thanks to Marlene and Cathy. Thanks also to anyone who steps forward to take on these very important [and enjoyable] roles within the Club.

8. GAME PREPARATION

OK - Parents - no-one enjoys cuddling their morning coffee as the teams warm up more than me - but there is work to be done! It would be great if those of us who are non-coaching parents could give the coaches more time to better prepare their teams whilst we parents help set up the fields! A few pointers [refuse to call to call it a check list - have check list phobia!]

* Nets need to be properly attached to ALL fasteners on the goal posts

* Nets should not be left dangling like a curtain alongside the goalpost and should be stretched toward the back of the goal rather than hanging loosely near the goalkeeper's head

* Goal posts must be anchored [sorry - I missed that two weeks ago!]

* Flags correctly in place

* Remove any potential hazard, such as extra goalposts, bins or team equipment well away from the field of play

* If there are no other teams waiting to use your goalposts and nets, be responsible for taking down the nets and
removing the goalposts to the adjacent fence.

So - coffees down - hands up - thanks! [All this work makes the coffee go down a lot better anyway!]

[Thanks to Frank Leversedge for the more sober version of the above]

9. THE CLUB WEB SITE
http://www.cordovabaysoccer.org/

Check out the web site. We are about 50% of the way through the revamping of the website - nothing radical but a few changes. There is even a weather link! No, we do not send out a kid with a wet finger hovering in the wind. There is a link to the experts at the Canadian Weather Office. [OK - can hear you from here - that is enough of those jokes!]. Plus sections for match reports, game schedules, coaching tips, field status and a bunch of other things. Go to http://www.cordovabaysoccer.org/ More improvements to come and please do send content for the site. In tech speak we need to 'populate; the site. And send me any suggestions related to the site - wfeek@comminit.com

10. THE QUIZ - answers from the questions in the last issue!

We asked these questions - repeated below with the answers! How did you do?

A: Which Country soccer teams have these nicknames:

The Azzurri? - Italy [Italy's national colour]
Bafana Bafana? - South Africa [it means "The Boys"]
The Indomitable Lions? [Cameroon]
The All Whites? [New Zealand - as opposed to the All Blacks - the national rugby team - please all pay homage at this time to the mighty All Bl...sorry...got caried away.]

Quiz question B: For which English Premier League team does Canadian Tomasz Radzinski play? Fulham - previously at Everton

10. REGISTRAR

Sadly, another person who is very important to the club and has done such tremendous work over a number of years will not be continuing in her present role next year. Angela Brinkworth is resigning as the Registrar - the person who organises, receives and catalogues player registrations and sends them to Lower Island Soccer in order that all players are eligible to play and are covered by insurance. Many thanks Angela for such a tremendous effort over a number of years - very much appreciated and fully recognised. Of course that begs a question - is there anyone who would like to take over this role? If you are interested then please contact Angela who is most happy to train you in the well developed systems that are used. Many thanks to whoever volunteers. And thanks again to Angela.

11. THE BEST PLAYER YOU EVER SAW PLAY - LIVE

No quiz in this issue - just a query. Who is the best player you have ever seen play soccer? It does not matter if the player is famous [did anyone see Pele, Edwards, Matthaus, Garrincha, Cruyff, Best, Charlton, Hamm, Zidane] or, for the younger members of the club, if it is a really great kid they played against in a tournament. So, tell everyone, who is the greatest player you ever saw play and why - what made him or her so great? The only criteria is that you must have seen them play live - TV does not count!

For me - it was Gary Lineker, The Leicester City and England stiker. Must have seen him play 30 times for Leicester City. He had unbelievable accleration and an uncanny positioning instinct. Not a powerful shot but always accurate and on target. Of course, Gary went on to score a ton of goals for Leicester, Everton, Barcelona, England [top scorer all time I think] and others and he won a range of awards. Yet, in a note of consolation for those of you under 18 who do not feel that the game comes naturally, the first 6 times he played for Leicester he was booed. My good mate, a soccer expert, said he would never make it. He kept falling over. True. Gary could not keep his feet. Ok - He is the best player I ever saw play live - how about you? Let me know and we can share your stories through "Goals by The Bay".

12. LOCHSIDE PARK FIELD CLOSURE - Christmas Break

From Chris Graham - Fields Coordinator: "Please note that our permit with Saanich Parks requires us to close Lochside Park from Monday December 13 to Friday January 14. Lochside Park fields will be open on Saturday January 15. House League through U10 Teams that wish to practice during the week of January 10 - 14, will have to use the Cordova Bay Elementary School field. U11 teams and older will have to use the CDC (Elk Lake) School field. If you require a key for the lights, please contact Marty Block."

13. OVERTIME [A PUZZLE]

OK - pour the drink of your choice and work this one out - a note from Lower Isalnd Soccer!

"To all teams and referees involved in cup playdowns: At a BC Soccer Association meeting this past Saturday it was announced that the OVERTIME rule for cup play has been changed for this season. The Golden Goal (sudden death) is no longer being used to decide overtime matches. All Provincial A and B Cup matches, and Girls Coastal Classic C Cup matches, that are tied on goals at the end of regulation time will play the FULL overtime session appropriate to that age division, no matter how many goals are scored during the overtime. If the two teams are still tied on goals at the end of the full overtime the winner of the match will be determined by a FIFA shootout from the penalty spot. This overtime rule is now in effect for all playdowns within the Lower Island district. The cup rules as posted on the LISA web site still list the golden goal for overtime but as the official announcement was just made this past weekend there has not been enough time to rewrite that rule. The c!
up rules will be updated shortly. The overtime sessions for each age division are as follows: Under-12: two 10-minute halves Under-13: two 10-minute halves Under-14: two 10-minute halves Under-15: two 10-minute halves Under-16: two 15-minute halves Under-17: two 15-minute halves Under-18: two 15-minute halves. Please make sure all concerned are informed. Thanks, LISA Scheduling Committee"

Well - that solves that!

That is it for this issue. We will be back in the new year. Please keep the match reports and other news flowing. Have a great festive season no matter what you celebrate. A very Merry and Peaceful Xmas, Duwali, Kwanzaa and other celebrations at this very important time of year.

Peace ...and Goals of course!
