1. KEEP WARM AND SUPPORT THE U-12 GIRLS

The U-12 Girls are selling "Down Lap Blankets" to raise money to buy
track
suits. The blankets are 55'' by 58'', come in Burgundy, Slate Blue, Sage
and
Tan colours and are very "comfy and warm". We all know that the cold days
are coming - so please buy them. The girls are selling them for $28.00 and
they come in a great little carry case. They will be selling them at the
park on Saturday mornings and can also be seen at the concession. Or just
get one of these great blankets from one of the girls. Contact Nicky Block
at theblocks@shaw.ca and order now.

2. REAL DYNAMOS - from Jim Turner

The CB girls U-11 Dynamos are continuing their winning ways this season.
Dynamos are holding on to a 3 year undefeated record, and showing no signs
of letting up. After a slow start and spotting Gorge 2 goals to start the
Oct 9th game, Dynamos got back on track with some great passing, with
Samantha Lee, followed by Nicole Conti setting up Nikki Turner for 2 goals
to tie, and Nicole Conti as play-maker again setting up Nikole Krossner
for
what turned out to be the game winner, making it 3-2 - all before the
half-time whistle. The majority of the second half was played in the Gorge
end, as the girls found their second wind, hitting the post twice, and
narrowly missing on several other chances. The Gorge goalie was brilliant
in
the second half to keep the game close. A rare surge by Gorge into the
Dynamos end near the end of the game resulted in a spectacular save by
Nikole Krossner playing in net to preserve the win.

On Sat Oct 16th the Dynamos took on one of the four Jaun de Fuca teams
at
home on Lochside field. Defensive skills were making their mark, as the
Dynamos, not about to be beat on their home field, took the play away from
JDF at every opportunity. Again, with no room for the JDF girls being
allowed by the stingy Dynamos, the Cordova Bay girls soon were showing
superior passing skills. Samantha Lee, Devon Chan, and McKenzie Dirkie set
up a defensive line that JDF could not break through the entire first
half.
"Bubbaloo" Lowery, Chelsea Howells, Erin Houston, Kelsey Hong and Emmalee
Roach all turned in very solid defensive performances on the day. Nicole
Conti and Nickole Krossner each scored a goal for the Dynamos, with Nikki
Turner notching the hat-trick on the final play of
the game from a beautiful set-up pass from Samantha Lee after she
dribbled
through three JDF defenders. Final score 5-0 for the Dynamos, with Nickole
Krossner stopping the lone JDF breakaway and earning shut-out honours as
goalie for the second half.

3. The LIGHNING - 3 and O! -

The CB U8 Boys Team 2 have named themselves "The Lightning". The players
are Alex Ebata, Mike Edwards, Konrad Herrmann, Luca Hoffecker, Jaiden
Kapus,
Liam McManaman, Jacob Palfrey, Brennig Prevost, Karsten Waters and our new
player Saxon Erickson. So far this season they have played 3 games and won
them all. In their most recent against Prospect Lake Jefferson there were
0-2 down before coming back to win 4-2 through great team play. The
coaches
describe "The Lightning" as a great team with 10 almost equally talented
soccer players. They are very much engaged in the game, run a lot and have
a
drive to win. They do great passing to each other and even start running
into space to work up opportunities. They have a great team spirit and
play
very well and skilled for their age. And they - as well as the two
coaches have lots of fun.

4. THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD CUPS - from Frank Leversedge

The first Cordova Bay United boys team has an outstanding list of
achievements. The most noteworthy, is that it created and organized the
first World Cups. The team was in its graduating year, 1986, from youth
soccer and was fundraising to play in two tournaments in Sweden and
Denmark.
Typically, they had fundraised through bottle drives, dances and selling
chocolate bars, etc. But they also wanted to give something back to the
community while fundraising, so being a World Cup year, with several local
players involved on Canada's team, the CB United coach devised the World
Cups - the first, as far as is known, of its kind in the world.

This first World Cups was organized and operated entirely by one team -
Cordova Bay United. From registration to refereeing; from the concession
to
clean-up; from scheduling to sponsors; from organizing the opening
ceremonies with national flags, anthems and dignitaries to printing a
detailed program for all participants along with national shirts for all
players and managers. The team even donated all its fifty-fifty profits
to
Simon Keith, a well-know local soccer player who required a heart
operation
in England. All this despite the last minute difficulty of having to move
the first World Cups to Braefoot Park because Lochside Park was closed due
to poor fields. It was an incredible achievement for the whole team of
players, parents and families - and an instant success. And the rest, as
they say, is history.

5. QUIZ ANSWERS

Here are the answers to the quiz questions in the 2nd isue of Goals by
the
Bay!

Question 1: Why are the Cordova Bay soccer colours Blue, Claret and
White?
[Answer from Frank Leversedge]

Why? Originally, the club colours were orange and black. They were
rather
drab (long black sleeves and black collar, black shorts and black socks
with
orange bands) but they were also very similar to the Peninsula colours at
that time which were also orange and black, and this led to problems when
the teams played each other...Popular soccer colours, such as red and
white,
blue and white, black and white, and green and white and variants thereof
were already in use. Brian Royer-Collard suggested claret and blue which
was subsequently approved by the then executive because [1] It was quite
different from any other club colour in LISA - and rarely seen when
playing
out-of-town teams in tournaments and [2] Two well-known English pro teams
used this colour combination - Aston Villa and West Ham and it was well
accepted.

Question 2: Which country that qualified for the most recent World Cup
in
Japan/Korea has club teams in it's premier national club competition with
names that include the following: Chiefs; Swallows; Arrows; Hellenic and
Santos?

Answer - South Africa

6, THE BREAKERS

The Cordova Bay Under 13 Girls team - The Breakers - tied 1-1 with their
arch rivals Bays United on Saturday, the CB goal coming from a free kick
after the Bays United Goalie came out of the box and played the ball with
her hands. Many congratulations for a tremendous tie.

7. CLAREMONT FIELD

There have been some difficulties at Claremont with Lacrosse playing on
the lower field on Saturdays and Sundays. Please note that we understand
that only Claremont School can issue permits and the school has confirmed
that only CB Soccer and NOT Lacrosse have a permit for the field from
Claremont school. Our games take precedence and Lacrosse will have to
leave
the field unless they can show a permit. Contact is Chris Graham - email
address and phone number are in the Contacts section in web site

8. A FAVOURITE COACHING DRILL

from Jamie Alley, Dad of Jillian Alley of the Cordova Bay Cool Cats U-11
girls, and Coach of the Gorge Masters Over 35's Women's Team (2004
Vancouver
Island Presidents Cup winners and runner up in the 2004 BC Championship).

"Squares". We use it to emphasize movement off the ball and running into
space. To do the drill, set up four cones about 10-15 feet apart in a
square
(change the size of the square to fit the size of the players). Split the
players up into groups of three and put the three players from a group on
each of the corners leaving the fourth corner free. Three out of the four
corners must always be occupied. A player can only leave their corner to
move to another vacant one. Instruct the players that they can ONLY pass
the
ball on the outside perimeter boundaries of the square, NEVER through the
middle. The person with the ball must always have two options to pass the
ball to without having to pass through the middle. This will mean that one
of the players without the ball will have to move to one of the empty
corners after the ball is passed. You can also pass back to the person
that
gave the ball to you, but get them to mix it up. They can start at a walk
until they understand th!
e movement involved and then speed it up when they are used to it and
eventually do this at high speed - great for conditioning too! A variation
is to introduce a fourth player in the middle who stands still at first
and
then later tries to take the ball away. This is a great drill for
emphasizing movement, creating triangles and supporting the ball carrier
by
giving them at least two options of someone to pass to. I have seen young
kids of 8 and 9 really enjoy this as much as my senior women. Give it a
try!

9. THE QUIZ - NO CLUES THIS TIME!

Quiz question A: Which Country soccer teams have these nicknames:

The Azzurri?
Bafana Bafana?
The Indomitable Lions?
The All Whites?

Quiz question B: For which English Premier League team does Canadian
Tomasz Radzinski play? [and a bonus point for knowing - or discovering -
where he was born!]

10. SOCK IT TO EM!

Good News! The Cordova Bay soccer socks are now in. If anyone needs more
socks for their teams, you can contact Loree Elder at home (658-1803) or
by
e-mail j.elder@shaw.ca There are also a container of socks in the
concession. These will be available for $6.00 for those players who wish
to
have an extra pair of socks for the season.

11. REALLY IMPORTANT REMINDERS

a. Confirmations - Just a reminder to coaches to contact your opposing
coach on Wednesday or Thursday before your weekend game to confirm the
place
and time of your game. If there is a heavy rainfall the day before your
game, you might make a second contact to make sure nothing has changed.

b. Goals - After your practice or your game, please return the goal to
the
nearest fence. It should not be left on the field or in between the two
large fields. It is your team's responsibility to do this and not the team
playing or practicing after you. If the coach for the next practice or
game
asks you to leave it on the field, then it will be their responsibility to
move it after they are finished. As you probably have noticed, the fields
are lined by Saanich parks staff who also do the grass cutting and other
field maintenance. Saanich staff do not want goals left on the field. We
have already noticed damage to some goals that was probably caused by
Saanich staff using their tractors to move the goals in order to finish
their work.

c. Protecting Goal areas - When your team is practicing shots on goal at
a
practice, please do not place the goal in the regular goal area. This
applies to both the goal areas for full field and the half field areas.
Move it out/sideways 5-10 metres. The goal areas are the first areas where
the grass breaks down and disappears and we do not need to speed it up.

d. Postponements - Just a further reminder about home games being
postponed for whatever reason, you must notify both the referees
coordinator
and game scheduler that your team will not be playing their home game on
that weekend.
