1. HOUSE LEAGUE KICK-OFF - a beautiful day at "The Fields" for the opening
day of House League. A big welcome to all 1st year parents and players and
those returning for their second year in what is probably the age group that
shows the most sheer joy at playing this game. No-one cares who wins and
that is how it should be [personal opinion!] for all kids in this age group.
Some great play too. I took in the Cougars-Rockets clash. Ryan knocked in a
beauty for the Rockets. Jaryd, after some good team passing, scored from 5
yards for the Cougars and then took out the whole net as he crashed into it
trying his hardest to get another for the team! Genevieve slid across
beautifully to take the ball right in front of her goal and prevent the
Cougars scoring. Coaches Richard and Drew were in great voice. But the
biggest impression was the all round smiles across all the games - players
and parents!
2. U 11 BOYS DERBY - 1st competitive game of the season for two of the U11
boys teams as Marty and Dave and their opposing coaches Jim and Brad put out
their squads. At this age group all players are adjusting to both more
players on the pitch, as they experience 8 a side soccer, and to playing the
off side rule. Both teams looked like they adjusted really well. But the
more players there are on the field the more important are the fundamentals:
good, controlled first touch; quick, accurate passing; lots of movement;
recognising and using space; the vision to see posibilities; protecting the
ball; and, a team first mentality. A big, growing year for all of these very
promising players. Brad/Jim's side won 4-2. Some of the best plays were
those dreaded near misses. Jordan [JR!] turned and curled a shot from 15
yards that just went the wrong side of the right post. Then Mason
[Cross-country!] connected with a hard diving header that almost took a
layer of paint off the bar. Mark [Clover!] got two goals for the losing
effort. And we had the first major refereeing CONTROVERSY of the season as a
clear penalty [biased parental view] was waved off by the referee despite
the [good natured] loud appeal from half the crowd.
3. U14 BOYS HOSTED COWICHAN - on the full pitch later in the day the U14
boys scored a last minute winner to beat Cowichan 2-1. The winner came after
Jaron [Trampoline!] rose high, controlled the ball, turned and cracked one
against their keeper. The ball rolled onto the post, back into play and
Brian poked it in! One very happy team headed back to half-way and just a
little later the ref said that was enough - time for a shower! Great win to
start the season. Congrats.
3. U12 Girls - both Cordova Bay teams in the U12 Girls age group also played
against each other as their initial competitive match-up. It was a really
good game, 5 to 3 [Cordova Bay winning if course!], with Michelle, who has
recently joined CB from Peninsula showing tremendous skill. Some of those
near misses featured in this game also and the tackling and shooting showed
real promise for a good season for both teams.

5. QUIZ ANSWERS! OK - did you get the quiz questions right in our inaugural
issue? Here are the questions and the correct answers [I hope!].
a. When was Canada's 1st appearance as qualifiers for the World Cup
Finals? - answer - 1994 in the USA
b. What was Pele's Brazilian cub team? - answer - Santos
c. What is the longest recorded time spent heading a ball continuously? -
answer - 8 hours 12 minutes and 25 seconds
Can you believe that? 8 hours heading a ball continuously!!! Kids - that is
like getting out of bed at 6-30 am, starting to head the ball immediately
and still be heading it when school finishes that day at 2-40pm!! Without
stopping!!!
6. THIS WEEKS QUIZ - In this issue we have two quiz questions - one directly
relates to Cordova Bay Soccer Club and the other has an international
flavour.
Question 1: Why are the Cordova Bay soccer colours Blue, Claret and White?
Is it -
a. The founders of the Club were Aston Villa, West Ham and Burnley fans and
those teams all play in claret, blue and white?
b. The original CB Soccer colours were orange and black but they were drab
and clashed with Peninsula so the Executive at the club looked for colours
not used by other teams in this area and decided on claret, blue and white?
c. One of the sport shops in town was having a clearance sale and had a lot
of claret, blue and white jerseys available so the club brought them all
cheap and those colours becaome the club strip?
What do you think?
Question 2: Which country that qualified for the most recent World Cup in
Japan/Korea has club teams in it's premier national club competition with
names that include the following:
Chiefs; Swallows; Arrows; Hellenic and Santos [nb That country is not
Brazil!]
7. YOUR FAVOURITE TEAMS - THE HEERSCHOP FAMILY - as we all know the Dutch
are passionate about their football. Three teams dominate Dutch club
football and, to understate matters a little, those teams are not very keen
on each other! So, should you get invited to Cordova Bay Club family the
Heerschop's at any time - or even be hanging with them at "The Fields" - you
might want to have a little fun by raising the question of which is the best
club team in Holland! The Heerschop's moved here recently from The
Netherlands. Look for Sandra's tulip handled umbrella! Father Pieter is a
big Feyenoord fan. Mother Sandra wears the red and white of Ajax Amsterdam.
Son Pieter cheers for PSV Eindoven - something to do with Ruud van Nistelroy
starting there. Daughter Annalies does not appear to have any affiliation
which is probably wise under the circumstances. Would like to see that
household if all three teams have the opportunity to win the Dutch
championship on the last day of the season! If you want to re-unite this
family just mention the name Mario Kempes...! [Now why would that be?
Apologies to the Heerschops for mentioning that name!]
Tell me the teams [other than Cordova Bay of course] that you support and
why you support them.
8. OUTSTANDING CORDOVA BAY SOCCER PLAYERS - it would be good to know who has
played for the club and gone on to play at the highest of levels. Please let
me know if you know people who played here and went on to pro, semi-pro
and/or international soccer.
One such player is FRASER LEVERSEDGE. He played all his youth soccer out of
Cordova Bay from 1973 to 1986 and represented Canada Under 20 in 1987.
Fraser played for Dartmouth College, winning 2 Ivy League Championships and
was offered pro contracts at Norwich City [England], Queen's Park [Scotland]
and FC Martiques [France]. His studies prevented him playing out those
contracts. Fraser is now an orthopaedic surgeon in Denver. He was appointed
an International Olympic Organizing Site Physician at the recent Olympic
Games in Athens, assigned to basketball and handball.
Please send more profiles of past players.

9. PARENTAL CELEBRATIONS - now for the most important question! What is the
correct way for a parent to celebrate when their own child scores a goal? At
one end of the possible range of responses on view at "The Fields" is the
knee bopping, eye popping, arm pumping, fist shaking, foot hopping cry of
parental joy sometimes acompanied by "did you see that!!!". On the other
hand there is the cool, arms folded, face unexpressive, slight nod of the
head response often accompanied by a comment such as "good pass to set up
the goal" or "nice team effort". Probably most of us feel like doing the
former and end up doing the latter - or react somewhere in between these two
extremes.
10. SOCIAL GATHERING FOR CORDOVA BAY COACHES AND MANAGERS - all coaches and
managers are invited [in the army sense of the word invite - be there! -
please - not so military!] to a social gathering at the Lochside Park
clubhouse on Tuesday, September 21st from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM to meet your
coaching colleagues and board members for the 2004/05 season. Pizza, snacks
and refreshments will be served. should be a great evening.
11. IMPORTANT - DE-MYSTIFYING CONCESSION DUTY! - This from Cathy Gustafson
[check spelling] - "There are many misconceptions about mandatory concession
duty for Cordova Bay Soccer registrants. This should clear up any
misunderstandings! It is mandatory unless you have paid the $25.00
non-volunteer fee with your registration. The registrar has a list of people
who have paid this fee. Upon signing the registration form you agreed to do
one 2-hour shift per child registered unless your child is playing for a
Prospect Lake team and does not have Lochside as their home field. It is NOT
your coaches responsibility to find a substitute if you are unable to
fulfill your obligation. You may pay a teenager to do your shift or find a
volunteer replacement yourself. You must provide a name and phone number for
your replacement. It is an urban myth that we have a list of teenagers
available to cover your shift. If a team does not have enough parents to
provide 9 people then the coach and manager will have to do a shift. Every
effort is made to schedule your team's concession duty on a Saturday that
you have a home game. If your team's date is rained out you may still be
called on to fill shifts if we do not have enough teams to cover every
Saturday that the fields are open. The concession duty schedule will be
posted on the website as soon as all the game schedules have been finalized
(likely October or November). In the meantime, coaches will be telephoned a
week in advance of their date. Our concession can not run without
volunteers!!!! There are NO PAID STAFF involved in concession - Marlene
Carriss is 100% volunteer as well as the women who take turns opening and
closing concession every Saturday." Cathy - thanks for sending this and a
quick endorsement of the tremendous work done by Marlene coordinating the
concession over many years at the club - Thanks Marlene.
OK - that's it - Keep the info flowing in and have great games and
practices. [Go Leicester City - moving up the table - sorry - could not
resist].
