magasine and Web Site.

Welcome

Hi and a big welcome to the 2004/2005 Cordova Bay Soccer season. Let's make
if a great one - lots of fun, plenty of goals, big crowds and loads of
learning and team spirit.

1. Coaches

There will be a coaches meeting on Thursday, September 9 starting at 7:00 PM
at the Lochside Park clubhouse. Team uniforms will be available for pick-up
on that night. The agenda for the evening includes: club communication to
coaches and parents; risk management forms (they need to be filled out by
ALL coaches/managers each year); technical materials for coaches; team and
club equipment; scheduling of practices; player and coach development; and,
field use other than regular scheduled games/practices. So, if you are a
coach please make sure that you are there as this is an important meeting.

2. Hey Ref! - Offside!

Many parents come from sports other than soccer - in my case rugby and for
many of you hockey. The offside rule in soccer can be the most confusing
aspect of this simple game [and they recently made some changes to confuse
us even more]. So, if you are a parent shouting your head off at U11 level
or above it pays to know the offside rule! To check out your knowledge of
offside imagine the rule in your head and then check that against this
explanation on the BBC web site

Think you know your offside?

Did you get it right?

3. Risk Management

Risk management is a necessary part of any sporting club in this day and
age. CBSC meets all the requirements of The Lower Island Soccer Association
which requires that anyone over the age of 18 years, who is serving the club
in an official capacity and who is dealing with anyone 18 years or younger,
MUST complete a Risk Management 'A' form EACH YEAR at the beginning of their
appointment. This includes, but not limited to, all coaches and managers
and their assistants, referees and all members of the Club Executive. These
forms, with envelopes, will be distributed at the up-coming Coaches/Managers
meeting and should be completed and submitted at this meeting in a sealed
envelope. You can also obtain forms by printing one off the LISA web site at
www.lowerislandsoccer.com or by contacting Frank Leversedge at 658-5964.
Please note The Lower Island Soccer Association will suspend any official
who does not properly complete and submit their form so it is very important
thay they are completed. Thanks

4. Heading

One of the best goals I saw last year was by Wesley Block in the U10 Boys
who scored what I think was the 1st ever headed goal for his team - he got
it right on his forehead, headed it down, under the keeper - GOAL! Great
stuff from an excellent cross [sorry that I can not recall who put the cross
in!]. If your team is working on headers here is a tip page [again from the
BBC site] on how to head a ball by Michael Owen the England, ex-Liverpool
and now Real Madrid striker [or forward as those of us who are more
traditional like to call them].

5. No More Sand pits - please!

By the time of the World Cups last year [what a great tournament] the fields
were more suited to beach volleyball than soccer. From about January they
were pretty bad for all matches. The Executive want to do all they can to
protect the fields this season. A big problem is too much use of the fields.
Inevitably there will be wear and tear but we should give the grass every
opportunity to survive as long as possible. The good news is that fields
were reseeded much earlier this year than in 2003 - so the roots should be
deeper and stronger. To help matters further the executive has adopted a
policy related to exhibition games and other "extra" use of the
much-overused Lochside Park fields.

Policy: "Lochside Park will be used only for regular scheduled practices and
home games. No additional practices, exhibition games or postponed games at
a visitor's field will be played at Lochside Park. Teams that would like to
have additional practices during the week or on weekends (including
tryouts), teams wishing to play a home field exhibition game or teams
wishing to reschedule an "away" game to a Cordova Bay field because of field
closure or poor condition of the opponent's field, will be required to use a
club facility other than Lochside Park. The scheduler should be contacted
for field availability. Additional use of Lochside Park will not be allowed
without prior approval of the club executive."

All coaches and teams must [PLEASE] abide by this policy.

6. Name this e-magasine

We have tentatively titled this e-magasine "Goals by the Bay" [with
apologies to Raffi!] but we want you to suggest alternative and better
names. Email them to us. Some on The Executive suggested: Touch Lines; In
Touch Lines; Goal Lines; Goal Posts; Cross Talk; Foot Notes; Claret (Maroon)
and Blue; Bay Watch; Bay Leaf; Bay Days; By-Line; The Kick; and, The Header.

OK - there may be a prize here - so sit the kids down, get out pen and paper
or keyboard and mouse, brainstorm some ideas and email them to me. It would
be good if they related to Soccer and Cordova Bay of course but anything
catchy and relevant would be excellent. Let the emails flow in!

7. A fan of...?

It is preseason here on the Island so we can focus a little on the other
clubs we may all support. You know - the ones that pale in comparison to
Cordova Bay like Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Queens Park Rangers,
Glasgow Rangers, West Ham United and Bayern Munich to name just a few that I
know have big fans within the Cordova Bay membership. Personally I am a huge
Leicester City fan having lived there for a number of years and gone to
almost every home game. My eldest son is a Manchester United fan which bugs
the hell out of me - why would anyone want to support a team that... [oh
well don't get me started...]. So, tell us - who are you a fan of and why?
Would be great to know and share people's affiliations and the reasons for
those often blind loyalties.

8. The Executive!

Who is steering this ship? The Executive consists of Stuart Wills, Rainer
Lucas, Mike McGrenere, Michael Marshall, Marty Block, Loree Elder, Larry
Eade, Gord Lee, Frank Leversedge, Drew Smyth, Chris Graham, Brian Collard,
Brett Hyslop, Angela Brinkworth, Warren Feek, John Kilbank and Ron Baart.
Their roles and responsibilities will be on the web site soon - see
http://www.cordovabaysoccer.org/

Any ideas, suggestions and thoughts related to the Club and it's development
then these are the people to grab! Or if you do not know any of these people
please feel free to send items and ideas for the Executive to this email
address wfeek@comminit.com and I will pass them on to the relevant person.

9. The Fun!

We would like to have sections along these lines in this e-magasine - all in
good fun and with no malice intended for the items that place people, what
shall we call it, in a less flattering light!

Great Goals - tell everyone about some of the goals scored by your team

Tremendous Wins - share your joy at some of the really satisfying wins by
your team

Bad Misses - oh - no - how did he/she miss that!

Chopper Harris corner - excellent and fair tackles that deserve recording
for posterity [see if you can find you why this particular sections is
rather ironically named after Chopper Harris!]

Excellent saves - great stuff from the goalies

Good fun - players just having a blast playing this game

Astute Refereeing decisions - where the Refs get a difficult one just right

Loudest Parent - tell everyone about the most enthusiastic parents and how
they express that enthusiasm

Revealing expressions by coaches [verbal or nonverbal!] - have a little fun
by describing the expressions of the coaches on your team

Old Cronies Corner - some of those who have been around the Club for a while
will tell stories from the past

..basically any story...all are welcome...send them in...anonymity is
guaranteed when requested!...and across all age groups from house league to
the really old guys who still dream of...[fill in the blank!]...

10. Know your game...Football/soccer facts

Here are three questions for you to test your knowledge of the game - good
luck to yourselves, your children and your parents with this quiz. Answers
in the next issue:

a. When was Canada's 1st appearance as qualifiers for the World Cup Finals?

1930 in Uruguay or 1966 in England or 1994 in USA?

b. What was Pele's Brazilian cub team?

Flamengo or Corinthians or Santos?

c. What is the longest recorded time spent heading a ball continuously?

31 minutes 15 seconds or 2 hours 5 minutes and 36 seconds or 8 hours 12
minutes and 25 seconds?

Answers in the next issue.

That is it - the virtual full time whistle has sounded and we are heading
for the showers. Please do send information to wfeek@comminit.com [or just
click on the reply button]. It would be great to have this e-magasine
chock-full of local Cordova Bay Soccer club news from this coming season.

Have fun this season
